A unity candle that is lit during a wedding is not a religious tradition, but a secular one. It Is often allowed for inclusion in religious ceremonies, however. It contains three candles - two of which are lit by the mothers / parents / guardians of the couple prior to the official religious part of the ceremony during the processional. Then, during the wedding ceremony, the wedding couple each pulls a flame from the repective family flames and joins them into one candle in the center. This is the official lighting of the "Unity Candle" where two families join together as one.
