Emily and Mike were married on June 23rd, with a ceremony at the Immaculate Conception Church in Irwin and a reception at the Stratigos Banquet Center.
These two met in March of 2010 when they both went to Pittsburgh to meet up with the same group of friends. Over the course of the night, as they talked to each other, Emily realized that Mike was working for Grove City College, only 7 miles away from Slippery Rock University, where she was finishing her Master’s program. Over the years, they continued to find out more things that they had in common: they had grown up less than 2 miles down the road from each other, had the same friends, and participated in the recreational activities in the area. And yet they had never met!
They decided that this was probably because Mike had attended Catholic school and Emily had attended public school. And yet as they discussed things, they also realized that they belonged to the same church. Emily realized that, since they were born within 5 months of each other, that must have meant they might have completed their First Holy Communion and Confirmation at the same time. Sure enough, when she looked up the old picture, there he was, standing right behind her!
March is a special month to the two of them because it’s the month they met, and they also had their first official date in March. So last March, Mike decided to take Emily to the annual Spring Flower Show at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. The flower show was particularly sentimental because it was symbolic of one of their first dates; they even looked at pictures on their phones of their first date. When they got home, they stopped at Emily’s parents’ home, where he told her that he loved her and finally proposed on the same porch where he had eight years before asked her to be his girlfriend!
On the day of their wedding, my second shooter, Lizzy, and I caught up with these two as they got excited for their big day. Emily was getting ready at her parents’ house and got dressed in her childhood bedroom, and we staged a “first look” with her bridesmaids that ended up being one of my favorite moments of the day. I was also able to get some amazing pictures of Emily’s bouquet, backlit differently than I usually do, that turned out just as well as I’d hoped!
I was also touched by the present that Emily got for Mike. She’d kept his business card from Grove City College, which he gave her when they first met. It was a sweet gesture and the perfect way to remember the beginnings of their love story.
After a beautiful traditional Catholic ceremony, Emily wanted to take some photos inside the church as well as around the Irwin area. I’m glad she wanted to get those pictures, because I loved the beautiful light we had in the alleyway behind the church, especially in the picture with the stone wall behind them!
Emily & Mike, thank you for asking us to be part of your story! You were so wonderful and gracious to work with, and we loved the cookies that you sent us home with.
