Claire and Andrew were married on September 10th, with a ceremony on the staircase of the Renaissance Hotel and a reception in the hotel itself. I had previously had the pleasure of photographing their love during their engagement session, so I was excited to meet up with them again to capture their downtown Pittsburgh wedding.
A Renaissance Hotel Wedding
This downtown Pittsburgh wedding was a destination wedding for Claire and Andrew, who are both currently located in California and absolutely love the West Coast, and it was amazing to see their friends and family come out to support them. For example, their friend, Austin, who was also their officiant, came out just long enough to do the ceremony before he left to catch a flight to Boston. He was moving and starting work the next day, but he wanted to be there for these two first—what a good friend!
Boldness was the name of the game for this wedding. Claire described her vision for the day as a “modern feminist wedding” and emphasized that she was keeping her name, even if she was taking some heat for her choice. But that sums up Claire’s personality: she knows what she wants!
Bold Red Wedding Details
Claire had chosen a stunning RED for her wedding, and I adored her color selection! You rarely see that in weddings anymore, but it looked absolutely stunning. My second shooter, Michelle, and I were blown away by the red flowers by Sapphire and Lace as well as the way the Renaissance’s famous dome was lit up white for the ceremony and then that same, bold red for the reception.
A Dramatic Renaissance Staircase Ceremony
The ceremony itself, held on the grand staircase, was beautiful to witness, though as any Pittsburgh photographer will tell you– that space is hard to light. I’m still so proud of how I was able to light the space with some strategically-placed flashes—no super-high ISO needed.
The Beauty of Downtown Pittsburgh
And after they were married, we had plenty of time to walk around the streets of downtown Pittsburgh for portraits. The whole timeline of the day was incredibly relaxed, which meant we had the opportunity to spend time outside, laughing and enjoying the day with their immediate families. One of my favorite images from the whole day was during this laid-back portrait session, with the two of them standing in front of some greenery with sunlight coming down on them.
I adored how loving they were with their families. It was obvious both Andrew and Claire are close with their parents—you can see it in the parent dances—but also with their siblings. Each of their siblings had prepared a toast for the day, though Claire’s little brother’s was probably my favorite. He was hilarious and totally lightened everything up.
After that, it was time to dance the night away. Eric, with Schiemer Entertainment, did a great job of keeping everyone out on the dance floor. The energy was amazing, especially for a Sunday wedding!
Andrew & Claire, thank you for asking me to be part of your bold and beautiful wedding. And Andrew—I hope you knocked that Iron Man competition out of the park after the wedding!
