Austin and Melissa met back in middle school, so this beautiful wedding had been a long time coming! But it wasn’t until January 2016, when Melissa was going with Austin’s family on their annual ski trip for the first time, that they finally decided to tie the knot.
They spent a few days skiing in Vail, Colorado, before Austin asked Melissa if they could leave early to pick up a new hat for him in Vail Village before their dinner plans. On the way, he said he wanted to take a picture in front of the iconic covered bridge—then got down on one knee under the pretense of “looking for someone to take a picture of us.” A photographer popped out of the shadows, there was cheering everywhere, and Austin ended up taking Melissa up to the restaurant afterward—where both of their families were waiting for them.
On the day of the wedding, I met up with Melissa for some gorgeous pictures of her and her bridesmaids getting ready. The church was absolutely stunning, and the girls could watch the guests before the ceremony from the balcony overlooks, in true Romeo and Juliet style. All of the girls looked beautiful, and I loved the color of the dresses. One of my favorite images of the whole day was of Melissa with her sister. I loved how these two naturally snuggled up for photos—the sisterly affection was so plain to see.
I also loved that Austin couldn’t just pick one best man—no, he had three! The whole wedding party was a blast to work with, but these three guys had the most amazing speeches and really set the tone for the entire day.
Even though I had only met Melissa and Austin on the day of their wedding, I truly enjoyed being around both of them. They were easy going and beautiful people to photograph. Not to mention, they were willing to wait with me for the sun to come out so we could get some beautifully-lit images. The weather was nice for the cocktail hour, but the sun was hiding behind the clouds during photo-time for a bit, and I wanted to get the lighting just right for them.
Austin and Melissa both love the outdoors, so they wanted to keep things earthy and natural. Oglebay Resort was the perfect venue for their vision, with the amazing exposed wood beams and high-vaulted ceiling of Glessner Hall. Melissa really did a BEAUTIFUL job making the Wilson Lodge stand out with décor. It’s probably the nicest I’ve seen it look! The greenery overhanging the central bridal table really just made everything come together.
Austin & Melissa, thank you for asking me to be your wedding photographer. I loved getting to spend the day with you and wish you both the best.
