Engagement photos – a fun, laid back photography session specifically to document a very special (and short, comparitively) time in your life! You get to meet up with your photographer, maybe for the first time, dress up, and have a great time playing for the camera! I love engagement sessions, since I get to learn a lot about a couple throughout their progression. Is the couple shy? Are they outrageous? Do they have angles they don’t like? What about kissing in front of the camera – are they OK with that? If you are wondering whether or not to have an engagement session – DO IT! You won’t regret the “practice” before the big day. You’ll learn more about your photographer, their style, their personality, and what to expect at your wedding.
One of the questions I get frequently, is where to shoot an engagement session. I have found that there are two main “categories” of locations – urban and scenic. This is my general categorization, but some locations offer the best of both worlds! Here are some of my suggestions for engagement photography locations in the Pittsburgh area:
North Shore: This location is great, especially for sports fans! You have the best of everything: the Pittsburgh skyline, Heinz Field and PNC Park stadiums, the rivers, bridges, and some scenic areas as well.
A quaint Pittsburgh suburb: This engagement session took place in the town of Sewickley. This area offered some great little stores, including a coffee shop, interesting buildings, and some typical Pittsburgh-area scenery. Great for couples that want their engagement photos to “feel like their neighborhood”.
Station Square: Ideal for some great Pittsburgh skylines and a more urban feel. Close by are some great industrial areas that have a slightly grungy feel that I just love.
University Campuses: I’m partial to the University of Pittsburgh campus, simply because I’m an alumna, but Carnegie Mellon and Duquesne University also offer some great locations. University campuses are great for some scenic locations and architecture. Ideal for the collegiate couple.
Pittsburgh parks and trails: The scenic engagement session. This session was taken on the Montour Trail by Cecil, but there are lots and lots of locations if you’re looking for greenery! Depending on your area of Pittsburgh:
- North Hills: North Park, Riverview Park, Hartwood Acres
- South/West Hills: South Park, Mingo Creek, Settler’s Cabin, Raccoon Creek
- East: Boyce Park, Monroeville Park
- Pittsburgh: Frick Park, Mellon Park, Highland Park, Schenley Park
I hope this helps you when selecting a location for your engagement pictures in Pittsburgh! Next installment: What to wear for your engagement session?
